London Museum of Water & Steam

This four month major programme of internal and external refurbishment works for the London Museum of Water and Steam’s Project Aquarius was completed in September 2013.

In addition to a fixed, short contract period for this high profile, award winning refurbishment, a schedule of events needed to be maintained throughout the programme for this historic Grade I Listed Building.

To accommodate this, we developed a phased approach to the project, ensuring that discrete areas of the facility were fully completed in series. The programme was designed to complement the schedule of public and private events being held during the refurbishment, thereby maintaining the reputation of the Museum and protecting its critical revenue stream.

The five month multi-disciplinary construction programme included the completion of historic building repairs, the creation of a new café/visitor shop and new locomotive sheds and the refurbishment of existing fire engine sheds.

Internal works focused around the construction of new raised access flooring around the museum to facilitate full viewing of the huge exhibits, new partitioning, suspended floors and ceilings, plumbing, power and lighting, refurbishment of windows and doors and redecorations to exhibition areas.

Externally, in addition to roof and stonework repairs, a redesigned main entrance was created to complement the new contemporary/historic branding brief.

Largely funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, the overall £2.3 million investment has delivered significantly improved visitor facilities and a sustainable future for the Museum
